ACADEMICS

M.S. 419 instructional beliefs are championed by an inclusive community of bright (B) learners that aren't afraid to take educational risks and challenge their thinking.  To actively participate in a global society, we know we must remain resilient (R) when faced with adversity while navigating the complexities of life and remain adaptable (A). We leverage our virtues (V) and use our voices, so that we are empowered (E) to be the change we wish to see in the world.  We will be BRAVE.

Curriculum

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

MS 419 has adopted the culturally responsive HMH Into Literature curriculum to enhance student learning and engagement. It incorporates inclusive literature, thought-provoking discussions, and interactive activities that foster critical thinking and a deeper understanding of different cultures. By implementing this curriculum, MS 419 aims to create a more equitable and enriching educational experience for all students.

MATHEMATICS

MS 419 has adopted the research-based Illustrative Mathematics curriculum as its core math program. This curriculum is designed to build deep conceptual understanding through problem-solving, discussion, and real-world applications. By implementing this curriculum, MS 419 aims to provide a rigorous, engaging, and equitable learning experience that supports all students in mastering key mathematical concepts.

SOCIAL STUDIES

At MS 419, the NYCDOE K–8: Passport to Social Studies curriculum serves as the primary, comprehensive instructional resource for social studies. This curriculum is thoughtfully designed to integrate the Next Generation Learning Standards (NGLS) with the New York State K–8 Social Studies Framework, providing students with a strong foundation in history, geography, economics, and civic engagement. As a companion resource, Civics for All further enriches the curriculum by promoting active citizenship, critical thinking, and student voice. Together, these programs empower students to understand their role in society and become informed, responsible members of their communities.

MS 419 utilizes Amplify Science as the core component of its science program. This curriculum is designed to engage students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning, encouraging them to think and work like real scientists. Through this research-based approach, MS 419 aims to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a strong foundation in STEM education.

PRIMETIME CREW

Each morning at MS 419, students begin their day in a small advisory group known as CREW, consisting of 8–16 students and led by a dedicated adult Crew Advisor. This structure provides a consistent and supportive space where students build strong relationships and a sense of belonging. Through a blend of team-building activities, student-centered academic support, conflict resolution, and guided self-reflection, CREW helps students strengthen both their academic and social-emotional skills. This daily routine reinforces MS 419’s commitment to whole-child development, ensuring that every student is known, supported, and empowered to succeed.

CREW & SEL

Once a week, all MS 419 students participate in CREW, a dedicated time for building community, self-awareness, and personal growth. During CREW sessions, students engage with R.U.L.E.R. tools to develop emotional intelligence, explore the Habits of Mind to strengthen critical thinking and perseverance, and take part in thematic activities designed to enhance their social-emotional competency. This structured yet reflective space fosters meaningful connections, encourages self-expression, and supports students in developing essential life skills for success both in and out of the classroom.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In Physical Education (PE) at MS 419, students develop essential skills to collaborate effectively, build lifelong healthy habits, and set and achieve personal fitness goals. The program emphasizes teamwork, resilience, and self-discipline, helping students understand the importance of physical activity for overall well-being. HealthSmart serves as the primary curriculum, providing a comprehensive, research-based approach to health and wellness education. Through this curriculum, students gain knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, mental health, and personal safety—supporting their growth into healthy, active individuals.
