ENL Services Provided at MS419
Dual Language
THE models that ENL offers are:
Stand-alone ENL
Students who are learning English receive instruction from a New York State certified English as a Second Language (ESOL) teacher. This support helps students build the English skills they need to succeed in their classes, including reading and writing, social studies, science, and math.
English language instruction is provided during a separate class period that is focused specifically on learning English. It is not taught at the same time as another subject.
The amount of English instruction each student receives is based on their grade level and their current level of English proficiency.
Integrated ENL
Students receive instruction in their core classes—such as reading and writing, social studies, science, and math—along with support to help them learn English. This includes strategies to make lessons easier to understand and, when appropriate, support in the student’s home language.
English language support is provided during regular classroom instruction and is based on each student’s level of English proficiency. In grades K–8, students who are beginning to learn English receive English language support mainly during reading and writing instruction. As students become more confident in English, this support may take place in the subject area that best meets the student’s learning needs.
