The Dual Language
Program

The Dual Language Department is committed to helping students become bilingual, biliterate, and culturally aware. We value and celebrate each student’s language and cultural background, using these strengths to support academic success. Our goal is to prepare students for success in school and beyond—so they can earn the Seal of Biliteracy and thrive in a diverse, global world
What are the biggest differences that parents should know about the program?
Dual Language is not a Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) program.
-
It is not a program where English gradually replaces the home language.
-
It is not a program that students exit when they are no longer identified as ELLs.
Dual Language is not an Integrated ENL class.
-
In Dual Language, students receive core content instruction in both English and the partner language (Spanish).
-
Students receive explicit language development in both English and Spanish.
-
These classes are taught by teachers who hold a bilingual extension certification in addition to their content certification.
At MS 419 the dual language program is taught on a rotating weekly basis. This means that we alternate between English and Spanish as the language of instruction each week.
